ofuro+table for Hamburg

The clients of this ofuro actually visited our showroom in Chiba in november of last year.
With german-like precision every piece of their plan come together as per scheduled and we are now ready to ship this fragrant bathtub and accessories!

IMGP8889

We had to supply a smaller drain socket to comply with the local plumbing regulations (limitation on maximum flow capacity). Also, we raised the base under the tub as required by the plumber to make the connection.

IMGP8890

The tub has the Bartok design brand both on front and back (freestanding layout) and is equipped with floor grating, stool, buckets and a step for easy access/egress from the tub.

IMGP8892

On the client`s requests we also provided a plank that can be used as a table while taking a tub. Because the clients are enthusiastic fan of Japan, I am sure they read books on this table, will use it to place their sake cups, maybe even will have their sushi-dinner while soaking in the ofuro!

IMGP8893

We also provided a coordinated vanity counter (photo here below). They will complement it with faucet and sink: I am looking forward to the pictures of the actual installation!

ofuro for italian hotel (2)

This is the second tub used in the new “fusion spa” of the  PALAZZO DI VARIGNANA RESORT & SPA near Bologna (Italy)

IMGP8838

It is rightfully labeled “Onsen grande” (large onsen) and rivals in size with the basins used in japanese hot springs.

Here are the specs:

material: knotless asnaro wood from aomori prefecture

size: 1800x1800x H650 mm / top frame border
option: 2 asnaro wood internal seat (fixed) W400mm
This tub can comfortably sit 4 strangers or 6 friends/family members.

IMGP8832

“Panorama view” of the large internal seat. The planks would be too long and unstable if they were removable so we decided to make them fixed.

IMGP8831

The space between the 2 benches. When used only by one or 2 guests, it is possible to sit lengthwise in the deep area.

IMGP8835

accessories include an Asnaro wood floor mounted spout with internal faucet

IMGP8841

This is the full picture of the spout with other accessories such as hinoki wood traditional stool (300x180x200H) and Sawara wood ladles with handle (te-oke).

ofuro for italian hotel (1)

We received an order of 2 large ofuros + accessories and construction material (flooring, tatami, shoji doors) for a spa corner inside a large villa converted in Hotel near Bologna (Italy).

A friend running a spa-equipment company (YOU SPA) kindly referred us to the client.

He made the concept design for the spa area with a modern touch. I am looking forward to the pictures of the completed space!

IMGP8812

This is what they call “Onsen piccolo” (small … bathtub).

It is a statuary hinoki bathtub which can fit about two sumo wrestlers!

Here below are the specs:

IMGP8817

material: knotless hinoki from the Kiso Valley (Nagano prefecture), quarter sawn

sizes: 1800x1000x H650 mm with top frame border

option:  2 Hinoki wood internal seat (removable) W400mm

IMGP8818

The drain is tucked in a corner.

IMGP8819

The tub will be also equipped with a wall mounted hinoki spout (see photo below)

IMGP8844

My partner Ikeda-san is very proud of this tub and could not help posing by his new masterpiece. I said “SMILE!” but this was the maximum I could obtain from him… We have been working together 14 years now, but he is unchanged: born in the Kiso valley like all the hinoki we use, our hinoki expert Ikeda-san is made out of stainless steel!

KNOTTY HINOKI FOR MOM TOO

We made a similar tub for a californian client in 2009.
His mother apparently likes the tub too so we received another order: same shape, same size, same material.

There is one problem though: the double slanted tub we made in 2009 was a hit. It was published on an american interior design magazine and was featured in a japanese TV program.
The wood knots pattern -unpredictable by nature- was very well balanced: powerful and refined at the same time.

The problem is this: can we make a tub with a knot pattern that is at least as nice as the son’s?
We do not want to be the cause of family jealousy…

But yes: the miracle happened twice! The tub is as beautiful (if not even more) as the 2009 one: compare yourself.
What do you think? Feel free to use the comments field below to share your thoughts.

Here below are the specs of the tub:

sizes: L1320mm x W685mm x H660mm (ext. dim.) 546mm (deep)
details: nat. oil apron, wood dowels. Iron brand at front side top-right

air and water jets for ofuro

We are an architectural firm in New York City and currently working on a project for a client in Connecticut. The client likes your hinoki tubs. Are these tubs only available as soaking tubs, or is it possible to build them with air or water jets?

Thank you for your interest in our hinoki products.
The tubs are made in japan using the traditional Edo carpentry technique.
They can be converted to jacuzzis but we cannot supply this equipment from here.
It is better and cheaper to do it on site (all the best spa equipment is american, such as Pentair, Waterways, Hayward, Jandy etc.)
In this way there is no problem for maintenance/replacement parts. Please try to contact a local pool/spa equipment supplier and ask for their advice.

Basically our tubs are made in solid wood and is very easy to open holes anywhere is needed to apply the jets.

We are looking forward to working with you and remain at your disposal for any question.

It took us only 8 mails to submit the quotation, answer to the precise questions of the client and adjust the order details!

Unfortunately we had many tubs in construction and there was no space to take good pictures.
We hope to be able to publish here the site pics once installed.

This is the site view with a large corner window opening on the green garden.

It reminds me of a saying of Cicero: Si apud bibliothecam hortulum habes nihil deerit.

translated: if next to your study you have a small garden, there is nothing else you need.
Well, I wonder what Cicero would have said if he knew about japanese ofuros…!

the cheap yen may bring an ofuro to your home…

The autumn brought a weak yen both against the dollar and the euro.
This means it is a good timing to purchase japanese goods, especially when they are priced in yen.
This post is not to push the back of our readers and convince them to buy an ofuro.
In particular now, it is a very busy period and we have a 45-60 days lead time for the production.

The reason for this post is that I know that japanese hinoki tubs are expensive, and remain a dream for many. Well, this may be an opportunity to bring home a japanese product with 15% discount compared to 2 months ago: so if you are considering buying and ofuro, I friendly recommend you to do it now.

I am not a financial analyst, but considering that countries like China and Russia are dumping federal bonds, and the saudis do not seem so clung to the petrodollar anymore, I feel that the strength of the dollar may be a flash in the pan…

I welcome all your questions and comments.

All the Best//
