little Japan in London

We exchanged mails directly with the client for about 2 months before going forward with this well balanced ofuro with an top overflow facing the wall.
The carpenter choose a the nice pattern of knots running from right to left on the top plank.
Accessories include a Hinoki wood wall mounted spout, ladle with handle, stool and
floor grate panel.

The specs of the tub are as follows:

Material: Hinoki wood K grade (knotty) tub
Sizes: L1350mm x W700mm x H670mm (ext. dim.) 580mm(deep)
Finishing: Wood dovels, copper apron, Iron brand at front top right

IMGP6139.JPG

The tub top plank had an wood inlay. This is a traditional technique used when a wood-knot is or may become instable. The knot is removed and an another piece of wood is inserted to match
the shape. Wood fillings are unavoidable when it comes to Knotty wood and usually it is performed with a white round wooden plug.
Wood fillings are not signs of faulty material but are a sign of care taken by the carpenter.
Said this, after a remark from the client, for a better visual balance we filled it with a red round knot.

eco-scrooge outlet tub(sold out!)

sorry, sold out!

Are you into energy saving, recycling, waste reduction?
Would you choose an organic vegetable soup over an overstuffed hamburger?
Do you enjoy a hike on the Rokies more than window shopping on 5th Avenue?

Than, this tub is for you!

The front planks have a nice gradation and are joined in such a way to enhance this quality, like a rainbow.
All the material is beautiful asnaro wood and comes from the same lot, which was partially used for another project. But how could we make it so cheap?
We could considerably reduce the cost by using some AB grade material.
Note from the pictures below that there are 2 flush knots in the top frame border we used.

Of course this does not affect the quality of the wood, actually the eco-scrooge who lives inside you will enjoy the skillful inlays as the mole on Marilyn`s beautiful cheek!

I cannot really explain in writing how silky is this tub`s inside. If you have a chance to visit Japan, consider dropping by at our warehouse in Yotsukaido (near Narita airport).
This tub is worth a trip!

Here are the details:
size: L1300mm x W800mm x H630mm (external
dimensions) 640mm(depth)

Nice to hear from you ! And congratulation on this nice opportunity for you to show your product!
We have been indeed enjoying hot baths… actually nearly everyday in Winter!!!
Attached is a picture of our daughter and her friends… It was during her last birthday (pyjama) party. Not quite a standard use of the Bathtub… but they had a lot of fun taking their bath together!

Hot tub for New Zealand

I think that the words of my client are more clear and evocative than any any detailed description I could make:

(…) Thank you for the photographs. It really looks a beautiful work that will give us wonderful moments for a long, long time. My house is on the top of a hill, overlooking a valley and the sunset. I am planting a face of the mountain with oaks, and I will be able to enjoy the view from the bath, as I did in my trips to onsen in Japan.
The water comes from a nearby stream and collected rain water . I am sure it will be a pleasure for all of us to enjoy your wonderfully crafted tub.(…)

Hinoki wood tub AB grade (quarter sawn) w/ overflow top cut
Dimensions are: L1400mm x W900mm x H680mm (ext. dim.) 600mm (deep) .
The bottom of the tub is treated with natural oil and the joints are finished with dowel heads.

The tub has a top overflow cut and is equipped with a water spout.
The client is considering the option of using a tub cover to keep the water warm for a longer period. In this case we recommend to mount the spout on a wall near the tub (and not on the side edge of the tub itself) to allow room to slide the cover underneath.

To cope with the overflow, we can provide a block of wood which perfectly matches the cut!

Outlet: `beefy` oval tub (sold out)

sorry, SOLD OUT
Another idea, a new outlet tub…
Japanese bathing
As much as we always strive to optimize the width of our planks, after few months it is inevitable we accumulate a small stock of narrow leftovers.
So, we decided to build a barrel type oval tub without having to pay a yen for the material!
To build this size of tub, 33mm thick planks are more than enough, anyway most of the
wood stripes we had were 45mm thick. It is a shame to plane it down so we decided to go for a `BEEFY` oval tub!

Photos of installed tub in the US

Our client kindly participated us these pictures.
Looking at the ofuro bath tub from the lavatory area:

Japanese and western. Just like the lucky owner of this sleek bathroom (a japanese-american couple), mixing it up makes life more interesting!

The tub is a large knotless hinoki with tob border frame.

cutting the top frame

This is a very nice cut of Asnaro wood. It has a large section and could be used for carving a Buddha statue or some aulic application which require the best wood.

New customs rules for imports into California, put restrictions on materials containing formalin also with reference to the packaging.
As plywood (which contains adhesives) cannot be used, we built a solid wood crate.
This is the second going to California this year.
It looks like the box itself can be used to make some furniture or millwork…
