hana yori dango sr – S5 outlet tub – SOLD OUT!

(sorry, sold out…)

This is the first outlet tub in 15 months… sorry for the long wait !! m(_ _)m
(But note that we have 2 outlet tubs at the same time! check also https://bartokdesign.com/8-outlet-tubs/hana-dango-outlet-tub-junior.php )

“Hana yori dango” is an idiomatic phrase meaning “it is better to have a dumpling than a flower”.
This saying expresses the practical mentality of the Japanese that appreciates concrete features over pure aesthetics and external appearance.

In a way, this overlaps partially with the “wabi sabi aesthetics” – but this is a story for another occasion.

Well, in this case, the naming fits the concept of a functionally perfect tub that is 20% cheaper than normal just because of a minor esthetic defect.
The material is asnaro (hiba) wood.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The wood has a pattern: check thoroughly the enclosed photos. It is not like erable (because it is the trunk and not the roots of the tree), anyway to understand the look, you can refer to this photo of “bird`s eye” veneer.
https://legnoquattro.it/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Erable.jpg

The tub is brand new but the material used is not the spotless AB grade we normally use: therefore it does not look as regular as the pattern of our quarter-sawn regular ofuros.

There is no problem whatsoever with quality, durability etc. It is just a “wabi-sabi” look.
And this is the only reason behind the 20% discount. (Note also that because of the smoothly planned surfaces, the color difference is more evident in the photos than it is in reality)

For specs and sizes, check the details below but let me anticipate that is one of the most popular sizes for a compact ofuro (S5)!

doubling-down in Hawaii

Message from the client:

Aloha, loving my new ofuro and the smell is amazing!
I would like to order another, this time a rectangular shape. Is it possible to have a knotty ofuro made?
Please let me know.
Thank you,

M. from Hawaii

The kadomaru looks amazing coordinated with the simple grey tiles and the green outside of the window!
I am afraid we do not have knotty material available and it has been like this for over 3 years,
I hope the client will settle for the knotless hinoki or asnaro…

★waterproofing and wetrooms

one of the most simple concepts yet more difficult concepts to grasp about japanese tubs is that you do not really need to worry about the plumbing.

The best configuration is to have the ofuro simply sitting on a waterproof floor, sloped towards a floor drain and just let it drain onto the floor, without a fixed piped connection. Think of the ofuro as a large bassinette.

Merits:

1. you do not need to raise the ofuro and create a space below it to mount the pipe, the syphon etc.
2. it is easy to move the ofuro over for cleaning and maintenance.
3. you can flip orientation or position so it looks at the sunrise at sunrise and sunset at sunset!
4. you can even move the ofuro to the terrace/garden and fill it up with a hose or other fun things like that.
5. you can let the ofuro overflow from the top rim, as in a japanese hot spring, giving a sense of abundance and infinity.

Objections & Counter-arguments:

6. the drain is requested for filing to the building department

I understand that regulations may have scarce flexibility. That said, custom made wooden tubs are not certified sanitary equipment (NSF, UL, CSA, ETL etc…) anyway. An ofuro is a soaking tub therefore is a fitness/wellbeing equipment like a home sauna or a tanning bed. Be creative, think out of the box. Your shower is a sanitary equipment, your ofuro is not.

7. We need a drain to connect to the overflow

Again, if you have a wet room, you do not really need an overflow. Think again about it!
An overflow is mounted some 50mm or more (if the ofuro has a top frame) under the top rim.
This means that you are losing 50mm or more of depth. Also you cannot enjoy the feeling of the “vanishing edge” and relaxing sound of water gently overflowing from the top.
Another problem with the overflow is that you will need a ledge or lining to hide the corrugated pipe of the overflow.
See the following pages to see examples:

8. We cannot install a wetroom

In some cases, we see ofuros are installed in bedrooms, or in situations where is not possible to recess or built-up a wetroom curb.
Actually, even in a bedroom, it is possible for instance to have a section with a waterproof floor (recessed or built-up) covered with a floor grating platform. See this smart example from a client here:

9. We do not know why but we want to connect the ofuro to the drainpipe anyway you can even move the ofuro to the terrace/garden and fill it up with a hose or other fun things like that.

No problem!! you can use a 1 1/2″ pipe (or 32mm pipe) with male G thread which matches our long socket ring.
Please check our drain details page here: https://bartokdesign.com/5-tub_details/hinoki-tub-drain_and_waterproofing.php and click on the links to download detailed photos and drawings.

and now, here is the main course of this article. Please read it if the previous argumentation convinced you.

OK. I do want a wetroom for my ofuro. How can I build it?

For the sake of bullet lists, I can think of three main categories.

a) use a large size shower pan/shower tray.

It may not be big enough for XL ofuros but there are sizes to fit up to our M-7 (L=1500-1600mm) size.
Cheap and easy to install, you can just buy one from amazon and have it installed.
Many variants are available: low rise or with curb, black, white, or even gray or purple! corner drain or center drain, etc.
Just internet search “shower tray large” or something like that.

b) use a wetroom system.
Some have already the drainpipe built inside the panels for a slimmer and smarter installation.
Here are some popular ones:

https://www.kudosshowers.co.uk/aqua4ma-central-shower-decks/
https://www.marmox.co.uk/products/showerlay360

c) DIY.
There are infinite ways to create a waterproof layer using PVC liner, asphalt mats, FRP, urethane paint coating etc.
Similarly, there is a wide choice of floor drains, linear drains etc.

We are available for liaising directly with your plumber or contractor (via zoom, WhatsApp call, or email) to answer all their questions, also at the time of installation.
On the other hand, please do not ask us which system is better or how much should be the gradient of the floor.
As you understand, these are all environmental variables, and only the people on site can evaluate the peculiarities and requirements of each project and decide which system makes more sense for your project \(^o^)/

using the internal seat

Hi, I have been in touch before about an outlet tub.
I am still hoping to purchase a tub from you and have been looking at the Asnaro wood in a 1200 X 750x 660. I am about 5foot 6inches tall and feel it would be a good a size for me to sit in.
I see on the pricing chart that there is a seat price (please let me know if I am reading that correctly).
Would my shoulders still be submerged if I used the seat? Is there a dimension for the seat?
Any advice you can give me to help get the right tub for me would be appreciated.
Thank you.

It`s nice to hear back from you !!
Yes, on the pricelist we are also including the optional cost if you want an internal seat.
You would not be able to get the water to your shoulders while you seat on it.

Usually people alternate phases of full soaking (sitting in the side without a seat) to refreshing phases of “half-body bath” while sitting on the seat.
Note that in japan traditionally ofuros do not have an internal seat while it is common to find it in very large communal baths in hot springs.
If you install a seat in a 1200mm ofuro it will feel a little small but of course, you can still slip your feet under the seat and use the full length.
Also, we can make the seat to be removable but be aware that in this case, quite blatant wooden rail will stay. Please browse the link below for some examples:
https://bartokdesign.com/?s=internal+seat

The seat is usually 300mm deep, you can choose the height.

———–

To determine the size of the ofuro, we recommend to our customers to create a mockup (using cardboard boxes, or maybe the space between the back of the sofa and a wall etc.) to simulate the space inside the ofuro and imagine sitting in it.

I suggest also making the calculation of the amount of liter of hot water required to fill it up and consult with your plumber to verify the compatibility with your HW system.

Please let me know of any other questions or problems!

Wabi sabi – outlet tub – SOLD OUT

(sorry, sold out…)

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of appreciating beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” in nature (from Wikipedia)

This ofuro has been infused with love by our carpenter. But even the best can make a mistake sometimes (if you want to call it a mistake).

It happened to this beautiful ofuro.
…What do you mean? …Where is the mistake?
Actually, I am sure that nobody would be able to spot it even examining it from close by.
But, there is a small mistake in the sizes. The backrest is slanted but is also slightly tilted as there is a 15mm difference on the bottom comparing the front and the back.
Of course, we guarantee that this irregularity does not affect in any way the structural stability or water tightness. Also aesthetically it is difficult to spot, as the top rim joint is symmetrical. See the drawing extract below.

But this cloud definitely has a silver lining: If you choose this wabi-sabi outlet tub, you will also receive a special BONUS!
★ BONUS: order this outlet tub and receive as a present a Japanese bathroom accessories set C! (you can choose any stool you want, traditional, traditional large or minimalist) https://bartokdesign.com/product/set-c-1-ladle-whandle-1-large-bucket-1-stool

colors of wood

What colors of wood do you offer?
Can you share some pictures of the actual colors/shades.

Dear Y,
We use natural wood, no pigments, or dies. Also, only conifers can be used for bathtubs so the colors are quite similar. (they are all light color woods.)
I mean that there is no dark wood like walnut or reddish like mahogany.

Our three kinds of wood are:
・hinoki (whitish. color tone similar to birch)
・asnaro (yellowish. color tone similar to oak)
・sawara (orangeish. color tone similar to cherry)

Rather than comparing the photos of the 3 samples, I think it is easier to understand if you run a search on our site so you can see some completed tubs and pick the common traits.
https://bartokdesign.com/?s=hinoki+ofuro
https://bartokdesign.com/?s=asnaro+ofuro
https://bartokdesign.com/?s=sawara+ofuro

If you want we can send some physical samples.
Where are you based? If we can use EMS shipping the cost will be 4000 JPY. If not (USA, Australia etc. – during the COVID emergency) we will have to use Fedex so cost will be 12,000 JPY

Please let me know how you intend to proceed.
