Akechi Mitsuhide was born in 1528 in Mino Province. He was a member of the Toki-Aketchi family. He was a childhood friend of Nohime. She later became the wife of Oda Nobunaga.
Nobunaga gave him an important post because he had intelligence and came from a respected family.
By 1582 Nobunaga Oda controlled most of central Japan, including Kyoto. This left Nobunaga Oda perilously unguarded. Mitsuhide’s night attack on the Honnoji temple in Kyoto was a decisive battle in Japanese history for it brought about the death of Nobunaga Oda.
The Incident at Honnōji refers to Mitsuhide’s infamous betrayal, which caused his liege to commit suicide. Since he was one of Nobunaga’s most trusted vassals, the incident continues to be one of Japan’s famous historical mysteries.
