Azai Nagamasa was born in 1545 in Omi province.

He married Ichi to make an alliance with the Oda family in 1564.  She was the younger sister of Nobunaga Oda. Nobunaga appreciated Nagamasa and was pleased with his younger sister’s marriage.

Azai Nagamasa had some mistresses before his marriage with Ichi, but the conjugal relations with Ichi were very good, and it was said that they loved couple. Two boys and three girls were born to the couple. In particular three daughters were famous as three Asai sisters.

Nagamasa broke ties with Nobunaga Oda in favor of a long-standing alliance with the Asakuras. In 1570, Nobunaga attacked the Asakuras, and in 1573, he attacked Nagamasa and Nobunaga’s forces surrounded Odani Castle. Nobunaga did not want to murder Nagamasa. Nobunaga told him to surrender again and again, and that he would give him his land, but Nagamasa threw this aside entirely, and the negotiations broke down. Ichi wanted to share her husband’s fate, but he persuaded her to stay alive. She and the children surrendered to Nobunaga.  Nagamasa died at 29 years old at Odani Castle.
